Why do people attribute extraterrestrials to explain things?

It's an Argument from Incredulity: "I can't imagine how the ancient civilizations could have done such-and-such feat, therefore they must not have done it." So they reference something that they can't prove: that aliens must've come to earth and they did it all for us.
