How do I know if my marriage is legal?

My husband and I got married last april in a destination wedding in Playa Del carment Mexico. it took three months to get our marraige certificate back. The certificate is in Spanish. I called the county recorders office and they said that they do not record foriegn marraige certificates. They said that I am legally married, but how does anyone know if it is not recorded? Also, they told me I need to have the certificate legally translated through the superior court, to get my name changed. When I contacted superior court they said they didnt have translators. So now I am back where I started. Please help, I want to change my name and be legally recognized as married. Any advice?
