Metal shaving in oil and very thick?

Evidently the metal shavings in my oil attract to a magnet. Said that the motor is caked on the inside with thick thick oil with these shavings in it. The teeth were all off the timing belt. Could this be source of metal shavings? If so, is it worth taking apart again, cleaning motor to see if this solves problem?
